Staff Picks: Barry Squires: Full Tilt

Catherine

Marg recently enjoyed Barry Squires: Full Tilt by Heather Smith, a Young Adult novel that has been described as "Derry Girls meets Billy Elliot with an East coast twist." Here is here review:

When I started reading Barry Squires: Full Tilt I thought it would be a lighthearted, rollicking romp through the bingo halls and streets of St. John’s, Newfoundland, it was indeed that but so much more.

My Top Reads 2020

Catherine

Now that we have safely entered 2021, I thought it would be a good opportunity to look back on my favourite reads of 2020. It was challenging to narrow it down, but the following are my personal top ten in no particular order.

Starting the New Year (not quite at the Museum)

Alannah MacGregor

As we all look toward what 2021 will bring, I am reminded of a new year’s eve toast made by one of my favorite TV characters; Sherman T. Potter of M*A*S*H*. While the quote has nothing to do with museums I thought I’d share it none the less; “Here’s to the New Year. May she be a [darn] sight better than the old one” I think the sentiment of this quote is on everyone’s mind as we celebrate this year in lockdown.

Service Update

Catherine

In light of KFL&A region's move to orange-restrict level in Ontario's COVID-19 response framework, we will be making some minor changes to our operations as we approach Christmas.

Moving from passive to active screening – All persons entering our libraries will be asked a series of screening questions provided by the Ministry of Health. Persons may be asked to access library services remotely if they do not meet the screening requirements. In order to facilitate this, our Napanee patrons will be required to enter the library through the upper level of the building.

At Home For The Holidays

Amber Meyer

For me, the holiday season is made up of a series of magical moments. Festive lights and displays, traditions, the smell of cookies baking, and the beaming excitement from kiddos everywhere you turn. This time of year is usually quite busy at the museum with holiday activities and concerts and of course our celebration of The Christmas Tree.  Although we have had to do things a little differently, the Museum is still full of holiday cheer.
