Winter 2022 Preview

Catherine

Even though we just beginning to dip our toes into the holiday season, library staff are busy prepping for new year by researching and getting orders in for the titles that will be must-reads in 2022. It goes without saying that all of the usual suspects will be well-represented (James Patterson, Danielle Steel, JD Robb, David Baldacci, Robyn Carr, etc.) but readers should also take note of the following fifteen releases that are perhaps less expected, but still hotly anticipated.

Remembrance Day

Patricia Richard

For me, Remembrance Day is a day of quiet reflection. It is a day where I think about the sacrifices that all military personnel (both past and present) have made for the freedoms we as Canadians enjoy, for their friends, families, and countries around the world.  For children, Remembrance Day often means an assembly, some reading, and a lesson about what Remembrance Day is and means to them. Below are some of my go to choices to share with patrons who are looking to read about Remembrance Day at home with their children:

International Day of the Girl Child

Jennifer Robinson

The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. Girls are breaking boundaries to create a world that is relevant for them and future generations.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Jennifer Robinson

On September 30th we reflect on our obligation to reconcile the truth of the grievous historic injustice committed against First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples in the Canadian Indian residential school system.

National Peacekeepers Day

Jennifer Robinson

The Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping, the Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans Affairs Canada, and the RCMP hold a ceremony each year on the Sunday nearest August 9th at the Peacekeeping Monument in Ottawa to recognize international peace support efforts. This day commemorates the losses people sustain on all sides due to trauma and death in conflict zones/peace missions.

Experiences of Canada

Jennifer Robinson

Canada Day is currently the center of conversation for its controversial origins as a colonial symbol. People see it variously as a point of celebration, lamentation, and protestation. It is time to reflect on what it means to be Canadian. How can we remedy present day conflicts rooted in historic and ongoing human rights violations? What would a shared vision of an equitable society look like? These writers take stock of how we see ourselves as well as how the world sees us.

Summer thrills and chills

Catherine

There is nothing quite like reading a thriller in the warm sun, am I right? The following are mini reviews for some new or forthcoming spine-tingling, edge-of-your-seat novels to enjoy on the deck or dock this summer.

National Indigenous History Month

Jennifer Robinson

In June, we honour the original inhabitants of this continent by acknowledging their rich heritage and recognizing the strength of present-day First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities. Celebrate the many rising voices in a multitude of stories which reflect the cultural dislocation which connects to the author’s nation(s) or how their community prevails.
