In the village of Roblin sat a one room school house, across from the Roblin United Church, currently where the fire hall stands.

The many children in the village would walk to school all year long. The school day started with God Save the QueenThe Maple Leaf, and our sacred O Canada. The single room was laid out with wooden desks secured together and bolted to the floor. All classes from Grade 1-8 shared the entire day together learning from a single Teacher. It was a day filled with many emotions.

The Teacher had full power to discipline and that could be a whack on the hands with a yard stick or standing in the corner. I'm thankful that I was spared that indignity for the majority of my school years. I would however learn a valuable lesson to always respect my Gramma South's direction to return back to school after lunch break. Only once would I face the corner in that one room school house. The violation and unwise choice of a naive child, playing sick. To this day I can remember how my little red cheeks burned with humiliation.

I loved those school days, playing in the school yard. Games such as Fox & Hound, Red Rover, Red Rover, Hop Scotch, skating and baseball. Overall, we stuck together and enjoyed a time that was full of laughter, freedom to run around the village without fear, and ride our bikes. We developed wonderful relationships, buddies and pals. Many of the children in Roblin would grow up to have very successful careers.

The school house may be gone but the strength of the education from that little school house still lives in the elders of this time. God bless the one room school house and God bless the moments of standing in the corner, that taught many a child the error of their ways.
