Overview
The County of Lennox and Addington actively collects all past due Provincial Offences Act fines and is responsible for the enforcement of fines in Superior and Small Claims Court. There is no time limit for the collection of unpaid fines. Failure to pay a court-ordered fine may result in enforcement activities, such as:
- Suspension of driver’s licence; The Ministry of Transportation will charge a fee to reinstate licence
- Outstanding fines referred to collection agencies
- Civil Enforcement, which includes wage garnishment, tax-roll or registration of liens against property and seizure of assets
- Reporting outstanding fines to credit bureau agencies to attach to your credit rating

FAQs
Why are there two amounts on my ticket?
One amount is the set fine and the second is the total payable. The total payable includes the set fine, court costs, and the victim fine surcharge. This total amount is to be paid to the provincial offices court.
The set fine is ordered by the Chief Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice as the amount you must pay instead of attending court to contest the charge. Court costs are an amount you must pay for the service of the ticket and/or summons upon conviction of an offence. The costs are authorized by Section 60 of the Provincial Offences Act, and the amount is set by regulation.
What happens if I don’t do anything after I have received a ticket?
After 44 days have passed from the date of offence, the charge is placed on a Fail to Respond docket. The certificates are reviewed by the Clerk and he/she may convict you in absentia.
What happens if I don’t pay my fine?
If you don’t pay your fine after you are convicted by the due date, it might result in one of the following:
- Refusal by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to issue a vehicle permit
- Driver’s license suspension
- An additional administrative fee of $40.00
- Additional collection costs, including interest
- Small Claims Court action
- The defaulted fine information is provided to a credit bureau
Payment plans can be arranged if you are contacted by a collection agency. If a payment plan is approved by the Justice of the Peace, it will prevent further enforcement initiatives if the payment plan is adhered to.
