Our Ordinary, Extraordinary Lives is an exhibit at the Museum of Lennox & Addington that speaks to this message through vibrant photography, commentary, and art. Our families today may look different from families 150 years ago, but this fact transcends time - Our Ordinary, is the Extraordinary.

Gibbons Family

"As soon as I heard the Gibbons family live on a goat farm with their four children, I was excited to meet and photograph their life. The Gibbons are a true family of the land. We couldn’t have asked for a more gorgeous and sunny September day. The four children blended farm chores and play seamlessly, a reflection of the fact they spend most of their days outdoors. During the pandemic, they even picked up extra farm chores. I was especially astounded to photograph little Wyatt - just ten years old - lugging heavy containers of water and grain for the baby goats, and doing it with a smile. That moment is one of my favourite photographs from this gallery. We finished the session off by visiting their vegetable garden and harvesting carrots and tomatoes. Photographing this family made me realize that those “days long gone” - the way we imagine a carefree rural childhood to have been in the 1800s -they aren’t actually gone. Some families continue to thrive in this pastoral way of life, and show the rest of us how the ‘ordinary’ moments of farm life can be completely full of magic."
