Learning and Development

Overview

Lennox & Addington County prioritizes learning and development by investing in comprehensive programs and opportunities that empower our employees to grow professionally and personally.

Succession Planning

Our proactive and systematic approach ensures we anticipate and replenish human resources as needed. By identifying, assessing, and developing a talent pool, we prepare employees to succeed in key positions as they become available. This process guarantees that essential knowledge and skills are retained when employees in critical roles leave. Since launching this program in 2018, alongside other strategies, our internal transfer and promotion rate has increased from 25% to over 65%.

Staff Training

Lennox & Addington County acknowledges the importance and advantages of robust training and development programs, designed to enhance staff growth, elevate individual job performance and prepare employees for greater responsibilities, thereby boosting the municipality’s overall effectiveness. To support our staff’s desire to expand their capabilities beyond their current roles, we consistently offer opportunities for professional development. Recent training programs include Positive Space, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, and Conflict Resolution Suicide Intervention, and Mental Health Training. We have also recently added Citation Canada, which is a learning platform with hundreds of courses on compliance, workplace safety, leadership, and soft skills. These learning opportunities demonstrate our commitment to fostering a skilled, responsive, and compassionate workforce.

Performance Management

The My Review & Growth (R&G) Program is our refreshed approach to performance, designed by staff, for staff. Rooted in collaboration, this program supports a workplace culture where continuous growth, open conversations, and meaningful feedback thrive.

It focuses on recognizing achievements, supporting individual growth, and strengthening relationships between staff and supervisors. With an emphasis on relevance, ease of use, and alignment with your role, My R&G helps us all stay connected to what’s working, what’s not, and where we’re headed next together.

Leadership Development Program

This in-depth program is meticulously developed to lay a strong foundation for leading and managing teams effectively within Lennox & Addington County. It serves as a prime opportunity for participants to network with fellow County Management Team members, seamlessly blending management expertise with leadership development. Key training components such as Managing and Leading Change, Coaching to Success, and Leading with Emotional Intelligence are integral parts of this in-house program, designed to equip our leaders with the skills and insights necessary for fostering a dynamic and responsive team environment.

Mentorship Program

Our mentoring program draws inspiration from the work of Lois J. Zachary and Lory A. Fischler, distinguishing the unique role of a mentor from that of a coach or teacher. Unlike the latter, who are often seen as more experienced individuals guiding students to acquire specific skills, a mentor acts as a trusted partner. This partnership focuses on creating a productive and safe environment where mentees can explore and define their goals, devise strategies to achieve them, and reflect on their journey towards these objectives. For the mentoring relationship to flourish, it requires a foundation of trust, mutual respect and commitment from both mentor and mentee, alongside shared responsibility for the relationship’s growth. This dynamic is rooted in principles of reciprocity, continuous learning, trust, partnership, collaboration, mutually agreed-upon goals, and overall personal and professional development.

Career Discovery Program

This program is designed to provide staff with firsthand exposure to various roles within the organization, offering valuable insight into different career paths through job shadowing and professional development opportunities. Open to all employees, this initiative fosters continuous learning, skill-building, and career exploration across departments.
