Maintenance | Print |

In accordance with the County’s maintenance and operational standards, County staff evaluates a variety of maintenance issues to ensure compliance with the policies of the local road authorities, police, conservation authorities and provincial government agencies.  These issues include drainage; road allowance impacts and encroachments; and operational issues such as speed limits, parking restrictions, road signage and weed control.

The County does not operate a Public Works Department and therefore does not provide any “on the road” services directly. Instead, operations and maintenance services are provided by the local municipality in which the County road or bridge is located. (County roads in each local municipality)

The local municipalities are responsible for providing the following County road and bridge operational and maintenance services:

  •
  • Winter maintenance including snow plowing, sanding and culvert thawing
  • Summer maintenance including pothole patching, shoulder gravelling and grading, roadside grass cutting and brushing, debris and litter pick-up, street sweeping, traffic line painting
  • Bridge cleaning, minor surface and concrete repairs, obstruction removals
  • Roadside ditch and storm sewer maintenance
  • Safety device (guide rail, traffic sign and traffic signal) maintenance
  • Streetlight maintenance

 (local municipality roads department contacts)

In co-ordination with the local municipalities, the County develops and administers annual maintenance programs for:

  • Surface treatment
  • Street lighting
  • Traffic line painting
  • Salt supply
  • Crack sealing
  • Bridge protectant applications
  • Shoulder rehabilitation
  • Guide rail rehabilitation
  • Roadside ditching and drainage
  • Railroad crossing improvements
