Tuesday Night at the Museum: The Bay of Quinte Railway

L&A County Museum & Archives, 97 Thomas Street East, Napanee

Join us at the L&A County Museum & Archives in Napanee on January 17th at 7pm as we examine the fascinating history of The Bay of Quinte Railway. One of the most successful private industries in Canadian history, and it all began in Deseronto during the mid 19th century. Hugo Rathbun, an American, was searching for more timber to sell in the USA, he discovered Deseronto and the rich source of timber to the north.

Rathbun employed thousands, shipping out vast quantities of lumber, built the largest door and window factory in Canada, ship yards, locomotive works, an iron foundry and brick works, all dependent on the fuel provided from the timber in the north. The Bay of Quinte Railway was built to move the goods from his factories. Rathbun operated 4 private railways at one time.  Using  the best technologies, they were the most efficient with everything, they were good business men and fine citizens.  As the timber disappeared, the Rathbun Company also started to decline. It is a valuable case study to reflect on our own economy and how we treat our non-renewable resources.

Admission is $3. 'Tuesday Night at the Museum' is a monthly feature at the L&A County Museum & Archives. For more information about a wide array of programming happening at the L&A County Museum & Archives, please call please visit www.CountyMuseum.ca or call 613-354-3027.
