The Art of Papermaking with Wendy Cain

Allan Macpherson House & Park, 180 Elizabeth Street, Napanee

The Allan Macpherson House invites you to participate in a hands-on, educational workshop. This workshop will introduce participants to the basic methods and equipment of papermaking and a variety of fibres which make very different kinds of papers. The workshop will also touch on the history of papermaking and each participant should be able to make and take home more than two dozen sheets of different papers by the end of the day. Please wear footwear that will be appropriate for wet conditions and bring some kind of waterproof apron or garbage bag to protect clothing.

Experience an evening of fine music at the Allan Macpherson House & Park. On July 29th, enjoy Sharlene Wallace.

Sharlene Wallace is one of Canada's most prolific and influential Celtic/lever harpists. Playing both Classical/pedal and lever harps has led Sharlene to copiously diverse musical influences and opportunities. Winner of two international competitions, Sharlene has created six independent CDs. These albums feature many of Sharlene’s compositions inspired by her explorations in South American, Celtic, Classical and contemporary music and by her close connection with the Canadian landscape. She tours internationally giving concerts, workshops, masterclasses and adjudications, and is Principal Harpist with the Guelph, Kingston and Oakville Symphonies.

Clay hand-building techniques will be demonstrated, also how to apply texture on to the clay surface and paint with vibrant underglaze colours. This summer, the Allan Macpherson House features 'Demo Days' where you're invited to participate in of interactive demonstrations in heritage, culinary and domestic arts.

On August 13th, learn about basket making with demonstrator - Naneen Tyner. An interesting fact about the age-old craft of basket making is that, while many other crafts have become mechanized, no one has ever invented a machine that can make baskets. Naneen Tyner has been weaving baskets for the past 22 years and now designs her own patterns. She says basket weaving kind of grows on you. A few basic tools, creativity, and a little patience and you will have a work of art before you.

Hand Crafted Soap Making with Latimer Soapworks

Allan Macpherson House & Park, 180 Elizabeth Street, Napanee

Under what saponification is and learn to make soap from scratch, using vegetable oils, lye and water . Participants will make an unscented and uncoloured batch and then a batch with essential oils and added colour (if desired). You will learn the chemistry of soap making, the importance of ingredients, and additives, and the basic techniques of this common soap making method.

Please note – you must be over 18 for this class, as there are safety issues involved.  We will be working with active lye and hot oils.  Please wear comfortable old clothing, long sleeves and good shoes (no open toes), and be aware that this can get messy! On August 20th, learn about Stain Glass with demonstrator Sue, owner of Sage Leaf Whimsy. Sue will briefly touch on the history and manufacture of glass, then will let you discover the ins and outs of stained glass construction. It will give you an appreciation for the thought, effort and creativity the artist has to deliver each piece and bring order to the chaos of many bits of glass.  Some of the basic techniques of the art will be demonstrated, as allowed by the space of the facility.

Mackinnon Brothers Brewing, 1915 County Road 22, Bath

MacKinnon Brothers Brewing is celebrating their first year of business with 'Back to the Farm: MacKinnon Brothers Beer & Music Festival' on Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 2 – 10 pm at the brewery. The festival will showcase the brewery and the farm, along with nine great local bands, plus food trucks, vendors, and much more. Many amazing local bands (indie rock, folk, blues, country, and more) will be on stage, headlined by Campfire Liars Club (featuring The Tragically Hip’s Paul Langlois). Local food trucks, MacKinnon's own corn-on-the-cob, a vendor’s area, swimming, wine and cider will be on site. This will be a fun party that the whole family can enjoy! Kids are under 12 are free. International Dry Stone Wall Festival

Amherst Island

You are invited to the Amherst Island International Dry Stone Wall Festival. Amherst Island has one of Canada’s largest concentrations of historic Irish dry stone walls, many over 150 years old – representing this region’s significant Irish cultural heritage.

The 3 day Irish-Canadian Dry Stone Festival will feature many free workshops and activities for adults and children too. There will be dry stone carving demos, the creation of two dry stone significant structures, workshops for kids, teaching the technique using lighter material than stone, 3 days of Irish music, displays of dry stone building techniques from both Countries, walking tours of Stella, driving tours of the Island stone walls, an Irish storyteller relating our history and more.  Free. 

The two day Dry Stone Workshop, under the direction of Irish waller, is the only activity requiring registration. Many VIPs will be present including the Irish ambassador to Canada, and author Jane Urquhart.
