Tuesday Night at the Museum Presents "Valiants Memorial"

L&A County Museum & Archives, 97 Thomas Street East, Napanee

You are invited to spend a Tuesday Night at the Museum & Archives. This monthly speaker series presents an exciting guest that offers interesting insights into history and the rich culture of our community.

On May 19th, artist Marlene Hilton Moore will lead an engaging and anecdotal presentation about her artistic methods and historical research for the development and installation of the monuments that were unveiled by, The Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean, in 2006. The Valiants Memorial is a monument to 350 years of the evolution of Canada through its military conflicts. The fourteen historical figures of this work were selected by Canadian historians to represent critical moments in our country’s history. These historical figures create a pageantry of history as one circulates amongst them in Confederation Square in Ottawa. The bronze figures, five life-size standing and nine life-size busts, are historically accurate in detail, costume, and portrait.  It is the living presence of each historical figure, achieved through the sensitively sculpted portrait and accuracy of detail that moves beyond fact to create a memorable and evocative work. This presence reminds us that each of these heroes was a distinct human being who dedicated his or her life to faith in our country, its morals, and its principles.

Tickets are $3 each and are available at the door. Find out more by visiting www.CountyMuseum.ca or call the museum at 613-354-3027.

Tuesday Night at the Museum Presents "Tod Ainslie: Pin Hole Photographer"

L&A County Museum & Archives, 97 Thomas Street East, Napanee

Exhibit opening!

Join artist and photographer Tod Ainslie for an informal talk. Learn about the art of pinhole photography and the methods he uses to create his cameras and produce his work.  His photos take us on the “Road to Freedom” as seen through the lens of his pinhole cameras. From a contemporary perspective, his photographs will guide you through the places and events prior to the Civil War and during a slave’s journey to get to the Promised Land known as Canada. Tod chooses historic sites that were seen through the eyes of the people who lived in that time,  who traveled those roads and who lived their lives (or lost them) in these places. Tod captures a sense of historical truth in the images of these sites. However, 150 years of time and “progress” have either eroded or taken some of them out of this context, either through attempts to interpret them or the built environment has grown up around them. By using the specialized pinhole cameras for each site’s unique setting, a genuineness has been achieved. His beautiful photography captures a strong sense of the period’s aura, a sense of the places themselves and an empathy for the people whose lives were lived in them.

Tickets are $3 each and are available at the door. Find out more by visiting www.CountyMuseum.ca or call the museum at 613-354-3027.
